Transferring Shopify and domain ownership through a marketplace deal

Hey folks, I'm in the process of selling my small e-commerce business (mostly Shopify store + a few domains) through an online marketplace. The buyer is asking about the transfer process, and I'm realizing I don't have a clear step-by-step for how to hand over Shopify ownership and domain registration without locking either of us out. Does anyone have experience with this? Specifically, how do you transfer a Shopify store – do you change the account email, add them as staff, or do a full store transfer? And for domains, is it better to push to their registrar or just change the WHOIS and give them access? Would appreciate any practical tips, horror stories, or gotchas.

I've done this twice. For Shopify, the cleanest way is to initiate a store transfer through Shopify's own process (they have a 'Transfer ownership' option under Settings > Plan). You basically enter the buyer's email and Shopify handles the rest but they need to accept and set up billing. Don't just change the email on your account—that can can cause verification issues. For domains, if it's a .com, push to their registrar is usually smoother than changing WHOIS manually. Just make sure you unlock the domain and get the auth code.

Wait, Shopify has a formal transfer option? I thought you had to either add them as staff and then remove yourself, or just hand over the login. That sounds way better. Does it keep the same store URL and everything?

Yep, same URL, all products, orders, etc. It's designed for exactly this. The buyer gets a fresh account with the store attached. I think it might require a paid plan on their end, but they'd need that anyway

For domains, don't just change WHOIS and hand over credentials. That's a mess if there's a dispute later. Use the registrar's transfer process. If the buyer wants it at their registrar, get the auth code and initiate the transfer from their side. If they're okay with keeping it at yours, you can push the domain to their account within the same registrar. Both are traceable. Also, make sure the domain is unlocked and privacy protection is off before transfer.

This is probably overkill but I'd also change all passwords, enable 2FA, and remove your payment methods from Shopify before initiating transfer. Last thing you want is them charging your card for apps or something.

Agreed on removing payment methods. Also, if you have any third-party integrations (email, analytics, etc.), make sure those are either transferred or disconnected. I've seen deals where the buyer got the store but the seller's Klaviyo account was still linked, causing confusion.

What about the marketplace itself? Doesn't the platform usually have an escrow process that handles this? Might be worth checking ther docs. Some marketplaces have a dedicated transfer team that walks you through it.

Depends on the marketplace. Flippa, for example, has a pretty detailed guide. But yeah, always use escrow. Never transfer anything until funds are secured.

Thanks, all. The marketplace does have an escrow, and they provided a checklist, but it's pretty generic. I'll look into Shopify's formal transfer process and use the registrar push for domains. Good call on the third-party integrations—I hadn't thought about that. I'll update once it's done, assuming I don dont screw it up.
