We are getting ready to list our company in about six months. A friend suggested posting on LinkedIn to reach potential buyers in our industry. But my LinkedIn is personal, clients, former coworkers, vendors all connected. Worried it signals instability or that competitors will use it against us. Anyone faced this? Is it worth the exposure?
Would you advertise a business sale on your personal LinkedIn profile?
I would not. Your personal network is not your buyer pool. It creates noise and gossip. Keep it private and use a broker or targeted outreach.
Depends on the business. If you are a service company with a strong local brand, a LinkedIn post can reach other owners in your space. But i would only do it after a confidentiality agreement is in place. Otherwise you get tire kickers.
That is my worry—the tire kickers and the rumor mill. We have 14 employees; if word gets out early, morale takes a hit. But we also want to avoid a long, quiet search.
I have sold two businesses. The first time I posted on LinkedIn. The second time I did not. The first brought me a lot of messages from people who were curious but not serious. One real lead came from it, but it was a competitor who wanted our client list. Be careful.
I don’t see the benefit. Buyers for a small business are rarely sitting in your LinkedIn feed. They are found by brokers or direct letters. The risk to your customer relationships is higher than the chance of a sale
There is a middle ground. You can post about general market conditions or “thinking about the future” without sayigng you are selling. That might prompt a conversation. But a direct “business for sale” post on your personal account is risky.
I have seen it done, and it worked for a landscaping company. The owner posted and got two buyers from adjacent towns who knew the brand. But he aalso had two employees ask if they were losing their jobs. He had to manage that.
The employee part is what keeps me up. We are close-knit. If this leaks before we are ready, I could lose key people. Maybe a separate, private LinkedIn post to a select list is better?
A separate account with no company affiliation is not useful. Buyers need to see the business. And private lists get screenshottsd. Word travels. If you are not ready for everyone to know, do not post.
Agreed. The only people who should know early are advisors and maybe a few trusted industry contacts. LinkedIn is a broadcast tool. You cannot control who sees it or how they interpret it
Rivergum is right about the screenshots. I have seen a “private” sale post end up in a competitor’s group chat within hours. If you are going to do it, assume everyone will know by lunch.
Maybe consider a separate company page instead of your personal profile. You can make a post there without it being tied to your name directly. Still visible, but less personal. It’s not perfect, but it avoids the “why is the owner selling” conversation on your own profile.
That was going to be my suggestion. A short post on the company page, no personal commentary. Let people reach out through a broker or a dedicated email. It keeps you out of the comments.
I still think a direct approach to known buyers is better. LinkedIn is for networking, not transactions. But if you do post, the company page is the least bad option. Just make sure your employees hear it from you first.
