I run a small consultancy (B2B, 12 employees) and I'm starting to think about an exit in the next few years. I know LinkedIn is the default for professional services, but is it actually effective for selling a company? Has anyone had luck using other platforms like Twitter or even niche forums? Not looking for brokers, just wondering where buyers actually hang out.
What's the best social network for selling a professional services company?
LinkedIn is where the buyers are, but it's not a marketplace. You don't 'sell' there, you network. I'd focus on building relationships with potential acquirers (PE folks, larger competitors) long before you're ready to exit.
Honestly, for professional services, the best 'social network' is your own client list and your industry associations. Social media is mostly noise for M&A unless you're in ecommerce or tech.
I sold my agency last year. LinkedIn was useful for stalking potential buyers, but the actual deal came through a referral from a former client. So yeah, social networks are secondary.
What abou Twitter? I've seen some smaller consultancies get acquired after building a following there. But it's rare and probably not scalable.
Twitter is a cesspool for business deals. Maybe for personal brand, but not for selling a company.
I wouldn't dismiss Twitter entirely. If you're in a niche like marketing or design, a strong following can attract strategic buyers. But it's more about visibility than direct selling.
LinkedIn is fine for for initial contact, but don't expect to close a deal there. It's just a tool to get introductions. The real work is offline.
also, be careful about posting that you're for sale on LinkedIn. Can spook clients and employees. Discretion is key.
Has anyone tried those niche platforms like MicroAcquire? I know it's for startups, but maybe there's something for services?
MicroAcquire is mostly SaaS. Not a fit for a consultancy.
There's also BizBuySell, but that's more for main street businesses. Professional services might be a stretch.
I think the OP should focus on LinkedIn but use it to connect with M&A advisors and business brokers who specialize in services. They're the ones who know the buyers
^ This. And don't waste time on social networks if you haven't got your financials in order. Buyers care about numbers, not your follower count.
What about Facebook groups? There are some private ones for business owners looking to buy/sell. But they're often full of tire-kickers
Tire-kickers and dreamers. Avoid.
Thanks for the reality check. I guess I was hoping there was a magic platform. Sounds like LinkedIn for networking and offline for the real work. Appreciate the insights.
