I've been running a POD store for about 3 years, mostly t-shirts. It's doing okay but I'm burned out. Thinking about selling it and moving on. What's the actual process for selling a POD store on Etsy or Shopify? Like, where do I even start? I've heard Flippa and Empire Flippers mentioned but not sure if they handle POD-specific stuff. Also curious if buyers care more about the Etsy shop or the Shopify store, I have both. Any advice appreciated.
What is the process to sell a print-on-demand store on Etsy or Shopify?
I looked into this last year. The biggest hurdle for POD is that you don't really own inventory or intellectual property (unless you have original designs). Buyers see it as a risky asset. Most brokers will tell you to expect 2-3x monthly profit at best.
Flippa is a cesspool for POD stores. Half the listings are fantasy valuations. Empire Flippers won't touch you unless you're doing $10k+/mo net. Try selling djirectly on the Etsy forums or Shopify exchange first.
Wait, you can sell an Etsy shop? I thuoght that was against TOS. Or is it just the business assets?
You can't transfer the Etsy account itself easily, but you can sell the brand, designs, and and customer list. The new owner opens their own shop and you hand over the IP. It's messy.
Also, Shopify store is way easier to transfer than Etsy. But POD on Shopify is a bloodbath right now. Unless you have a killer niche, buyers will lowball you.
Step 1: Realize your store is worth less than you think. Step 2: Cry. Step 3: List on Flippa for 10x revenue and get zero bids. Step 4: Repeat.
That's bleak. What if the store has a strong following on social media? Does that add value?
Yeah, I have about 12k Instagram followners but engagement is low. I'm guessing that won't move the needle much.
Low engagement followers are basically worthless to buyers. They want to see sales, not vanity metrics. Focus on your net profit and customer repeat rate.
Honestly, if you're burned out, consider just shutting it doan and selling the designs on Creative Market. Less hassle than dealing with tire-kickers.
Or sell the whole thing to a dropshipping bro on TikTok. They'll buy anything with a 'passive income' label.
I'll look into the Shopify exchange first. Thanks for the reality check, even if it stings.
