What automated tools are best for valuing e-commerce stores?

I run a small outdoor gear brand on Shopify and I'm starting to think about an exit in the next year or two. I've seen a bunch of tools advertised, some free calculators, some subscription platforms, that claim to value e-commerce stores automatically. Has anyone actually used these? I'm not looking for a full appraisal, just a ballpark to know if I'm in the right range before I talk to brokers. What's worth trying and what's a waste of money?

I've used a few. The free ones are mostly lead generators for brokerages. They'll give you a number based on revenue multiples but won't account for your ad spend or inventory situation. Not useless, but don't take the output seriously.

What multiple range are you seeing for Shopify stores right now? I've heard everything from 2x to 5x SDE depending on niche and repeat purchase rate.

That's about right. But the tools don't know your repeat rate unless you feed it in. That's the problem—automation is only as good as the inputs. If you're just typing in revenue and profit, you're getting a generic number.

I tried one of the subscription platforms forr a few months. It synced with my Shopify and Amazon accounts and gave me a valuation that updated monthly. It was interesting to watch the trend, but the number swung wildly based on seasonality. Also it didn't factor in my email lpist at all, which I think is a big part of my value. Cancelled after the trial.

Honestly the best automated thing I found was a spreadsheet I built myself after reading a few broker guides. Took a weekend. The paid tools didn't tell me anything I couldn't calculate once I understood what buyers look for. Not trying to be dismissive of the tools, but for a small store the ROI wasn't there.

pondskater_88 what platform was that? I'm curious about the monthly tracking aspect even if the absolute number was off.

It was one of the bigger names in the space. I'd rather not name it because my experience was mixed and I don't want to steer anyone away based on my specific issues. The concept is sound, the execution just wasn't there for my situation.

Appreciate the input. The seasonal swing issue is a real concern for me since my sales are heavily Q4-weighted. Maybe I'll try a free calculator just to get a floor number and then build out my own model from there. Still curious if anyone has found a paid tool that handles seasonality reasonably well.
