Need to sell my small business quickly. What are the key steps to make it happen fast without leaving money on the table? I'm talking months, not years.

Get your financials in order first. Clean books and tax returns for the last 3 years. Buyers will walk if they see messy records.

How fast is fast? If you want a quick sale, you might need to accept a lower valuation. Speed and price don't usually go togther.

Also get a professional valuation. Not a free online one. Worth the money to know what you're actually working with.

Thanks. I have quickbooks but haven't kept up with it. I'll get that sorteed. And fast means 4-6 months max.

4-6 months is doable but tight. You'll need to be proactive. Don't just list with a broker and wait. Network with potential buyers directly.

You could look into business brokers that specialize in quick sales. They have buyer lists and can move faster than you alone.

Brokers take a cut though. If you're okay wkth 8-10% commission, they can speed things up.

quiet_quasar

Be realistic about what buyers want. They care about cash flow, customer base, and why you're selling. Have clear answers ready.

mossy_roof

Make sure you have a transition plan. Buyers want to know you'll stick around for a few mo nths to help. That can make or break a deal.

Don't forget legal and accounting fees. Budget for them. They add up.

breezycoconut

Anyone have experience with online marketplaces? I'm not sure if they're worth the fees.

I tried one for my landscaping business. Got some inquiries but a lot of tire kickers. Still, it reesulted in a sale in about 5 months.

quiet_quasar

Make sure you set up a data room early. Buyers will ask for documents quickly if they're serious. Having it re ady speeds things up.

Also, consider if there's a strategic buyer, like a competitor. They might pay more and move faster because they already know the industry.

Good luck. Let us know how it goes.
