Closing stress

Surviving the stress of closing day

We're three days out from closing on the sale of my 18-year-old landscaping business. I thought I'd be celebrating but I'm just pacing around, snapping at my wife, and second-guessing every number. The buyer's lawyer keeps emailing with new requests. Any advice on how to keep it together until the wire hits?

Closing day is a weird kind of exhaustion. For me, the last week was mostly waiting and feeling useless. I tried to stay busy with small tasks, but honestly, the hard part was just not having any real control anymore.

Take a walk. Seriously. Get out of the house for an hour without your phone. The last-minute lawyer stuff will still be there.

I had a similar experience two years ago. The stress peaked the night before closing, and and then it just evaporated when when the funds were confirmed. The anticipation was worse than the event. One thing that helped was having a checklist of exactly what I needed to bring and do that morning. Reduced the mental load.

What's the buyer asking for now? Sometimes tgey push for stuff at the last minute just because they can.

My closing was delayed by a week because of a title issue. The stress was brutal, but the sale still wentt through. Try to separate the outcome from the process. You've done the work. The rest is admin.

i remember snapping at my husband over nothing. It's the pressure of the unknown. Give yourself some grace and maybe warn your wife that you're not yourself right now. That helped us.

Also, don't check your email every five minutes. Set specific times to deal with the lawyer stuff. It'll drive you crazy otherwise.

One more thing. The day of closing, bring snacks and water. Sounds dumb but you might be there for houmrs and low blood sugar makes everything worse.

The buyer wants an extra week of transition support for free. I already agreed to two weeks paid. My lawyer says to hold firm. I'm just tired of the back and forth.

Hold firm. They're already getting a good deal. Don't give away your time for free because you're stressed.

If it helps, write down the worst-case scenario. For me, it was the deal falling through. Once I faced that, I realized I could survive it. It made the small stuff less scary.

Closing day is just a day. The business is sold either way. You'll get through it.
