Finding alternative ways to get your business noticed

I'm getting ready to list my business for sale in a few months (small service biz). The usual channels – broker, bizbuysell, etc – feel like a black hole. What are some alternative ways to get noticed by potential buyers? I'm talking outside the box stuff that actually worked for you or someone you know. Not looking for generic 'network more' advice.

Honestly, I found my buyer through a Local business Facebook group. Posted anonymously asking if anyone knew someone looking to buy a service company. Got two leads, one turned into a deal.

Facebook groups? That's a new one. Did you post from your personal account? I'd be worried about employees seeing it.

Burner account. Used a fake name, mrt the guy at a Panera. Felt like a drug deal but it worked.

I've heard of people sponsoring local events or youth sports teams – gets your name out there in the community. But that's more for general marketing, not sure it helps with a sale. Maybe if uou mention to people that you're looking to retire?

Sponsorships are interesting. We already do a bit of that. But how do you pivot that that into 'hey I'm selling' without sounding desperate?

Have you tried reaching out to cOmpetitors? Not the big guys, but smaller ones who might want to expand. A buddy sold his landscaping company to a rival down the street. They already knew the business and it was a quick deal.

Competitors can be risky. They might use it to poach your clients if the deal falls through. i'd be careful.

LinkedIn. I know it's not 'alternative' but if you have a decent network, a subtle post about 'exploring new opportunities' can get people talking. Or just message a few key contacts directly. That's how I sold my last business.

What about industry-specific forums or associations? Sometimes they have classifieds or member directories. Might be worth a shot.

Also, don't overlook your own employees. If you have a rockstar manager who's been wanting to own a business, you could do a seller-financed deal. Not for everyone, but it's a possibility.
