I've been running a digital course business on Teachable for about three years. It's been profitable and has a solid subscriber base. I'm considering selling the business, but I'm not sure how sellable a course website is when the platform (Teachable, Kajabi, etc.) is the backbone. Can you actually sell the website and transfer everything? Or are these platforms not designed for that kind of transaction? Would love to hear from anyone who has done it or looked into it.
Can you sell a digital course website hosted on Teachable or Kajabi?
I looked into this last year when I wanted to sell my Kajabi site. The big issue is that the platform account itself usually cant be transferred. The new owner would need their own account and you'd have to migrate everything. Some platforms allow you to change the account owner, but it's not always straightforward. Check with support first.
From what I understand, Kajabi has a process for transferring ownership if you're on a higher-tier plan. But it's not just a simple handover—the new owner has to be approved by Kajabi. Teachable might be different. Did you ask their support yet? That's probably your first step.
I sold a course business last year. It was on Thinkific, not Teachable or Kajabi, but similar situation. The sale included the content, email list, and brand, but the platform account had to be recreated under the buyer's name. It took about a month to migrate everything. The buyer was fine with it because they wanted their own account anyway. So it's doable, but you have to be upfront about the migration process.
Is it really worth selling if the platform is the main asset? Buyers might see it as risky because they're dependent on Teachable/Kajabi's terms. If the platform changes its fees or policies, the business value could tank. Just something to consider.
What SkepticalSue said. I'd be wary of buying a course site that's tied to a specific platform unless the content and audience are esily portable. But if the audience is loyal and the content is unique, it can still be a good buy. The platform is just a delivery tool.
I've bought and sold a few online businesses. The key is to have a clear transfer plan. For Teachable, I believe you can transfer the school to another owner if you contact support. They might require the new owner to create an account first. It's not instant, but it's possible. The bigger challenge is transferring the email list and ensuring students can access their courses after the switch. Make sure you have all that documented.
Also, check if your current plan allows for multiple admins or owners. Some platforms have limitations on that. If not, you might need to upgrade temporarily to facilitate the transfer.
I think the real value is in the content and the customer list, not the platform itself. If you can export everything (courses, users, etc.), then the buyer can set up on their own platform. That might actually be more attractive to some buyers because they get full control. So maybe focus on what's portable rather than the platform account
But if the courses are built using platform-specific features (quizzes, certificates, etc.), migrating could be a nightmare. Buyers might discount the price for that hassle. I'd get a valuation that accounts for The migration work.
Has anyone actually completed a sale on Teachable? I'd like to hear a first-hand account. The process might be smoother than we think.
